How to Play Catan Junior
CATAN Junior is the pirate-themed junior adaptation of CATAN: players gather resource tiles, build ships and pirates’ lairs, and race to establish all seven lairs. This guide explains the standard CATAN Junior rules; for more family game guides, visit Play More.

Objective
Your aim is to build seven pirates’ lairs before anyone else. Lairs must be connected to your existing network by ships, except where the board’s starting arrangement or a Coco tile permits a special placement. The lair on Spooky Island counts toward your seven if you claim it.
Setup
Use the board side that matches the player count: the standard game includes a two-player side and a three- or four-player side. Put the resource tiles, building-cost display, Coco tiles, and Ghost Captain beside the board. Each player chooses a color, takes that color’s lairs and ships, and places the indicated starting pieces on the matching marked spaces. Keep your remaining pieces and resource tiles in front of you. Choose a first player, then take turns clockwise. Use the setup illustration in your edition’s rulebook when placing the initial lairs and ships, because the starting spaces are printed for each board side.
Core turn flow
- Roll the die. The result identifies an island or activates the Ghost Captain. When an island produces, every player with a lair beside that island receives the matching resource tile for each adjacent lair. A lair beside more than one producing connection can therefore earn more than one tile.
- Resolve the Ghost Captain when shown. Move the Ghost Captain to an island of your choice. That island does not produce resources while the Ghost Captain remains there. Unlike the robber in standard CATAN, the Ghost Captain does not make you take a resource from another player.
- Trade resources. You may trade with the marketplace once per turn at its displayed one-for-one rate. You may also trade with the general supply at the displayed two-for-one rate, with no stated limit on those supply trades. Other players are not trading partners in the standard rules.
- Build or buy. Spend the resource combination shown on the building-cost display to place a ship or lair, or to buy a Coco tile. You may perform these actions in any order during your turn if you can pay for them.
- Connect your network. A new ship extends your route to another building site. A new lair must be placed on an empty lair-site adjacent to one of your ships or lairs, as permitted by the board. Do not place a lair on an occupied site.
- Use a Coco tile. Resolve the tile immediately after buying it. Coco tiles can provide a free build, resources, or a Ghost Captain movement, depending on the tile. Follow the icon and wording on your copy, then discard or retain it as directed.
How the game ends and who wins
The game ends immediately when a player builds their seventh pirates’ lair. Count a lair on Spooky Island if that player has earned the right to build there through the Coco-tile rule. That player wins; there is no separate points total or end-of-round scoring in the standard game.
Beginner tips
- Plan a route before spending resources so a ship actually opens a useful lair-site.
- Watch every roll: all players can receive resources, not only the person whose turn it is.
- Use the marketplace when one missing tile completes a build, but save flexible resources for a later turn when possible.
- Buy Coco tiles when their immediate effect advances your network or solves a resource shortage.
- Keep the Ghost Captain away from islands that supply the resources you need most.
FAQs
Can I trade with another player?
Not under the standard CATAN Junior rules. Trade with the marketplace once per turn or with the general supply at the displayed two-for-one rate.
Does the Ghost Captain steal resources?
No. It only blocks production on the island where it stands. A roll that points to that island produces no resources until the Ghost Captain moves.
Is this the same as CATAN Junior: Madagascar?
No. CATAN Junior: Madagascar is a distinct later edition with its own board presentation and rule details. This guide covers the standard pirate-themed CATAN Junior edition, so use the rulebook packaged with a Madagascar copy for that version.
