What you are trying to do

Pandemic is a team game. Everyone works together against the board. Your shared goal is to stop outbreaks, treat infections, and discover cures for the diseases before the situation gets out of control. Play cooperatively, share information, and plan a few turns ahead.

What you need and how to set up

Use the game box contents: the world map board, disease cubes, player deck and infection deck, role cards, player pawns, research stations, and cure markers. Setup includes placing the board, giving each player a role card and pawn, dealing starting hands, and preparing the two decks. Some versions also ask you to place initial infection cubes on the board and set a difficulty level.

Exact counts, initial infection steps, and difficulty choices vary by edition or house rules. Check the official rulebook or your regional rules for precise setup details before you begin.

How to play

  1. Take your turn: On your turn you use your available actions to move around the map, treat disease cubes, share cards with teammates, build research stations, or work toward discovering cures. Roles give you special powers—use them to help the team.
  2. Draw player cards: After your actions you draw from the player deck. This deck contains city cards and special challenge cards that accelerate the spread. Plan your hand so you can cooperate with others.
  3. Infect the board: After drawing, reveal infection cards that place more disease cubes on cities. These cause outbreaks if a city is already crowded. Watch the board and respond quickly to hot spots.
  4. React and adapt: Between turns, discuss strategy with teammates. Prioritize threats, protect critical hubs, and move disease cubes away from crowded cities.

This is a high-level loop. Different Pandemic editions or expansions add rules and special events. Check the official rulebook for the exact turn order and card effects in your copy.

How a round or game ends

You win when the team discovers cures for all required diseases. You lose if the game reaches certain failure conditions: the player deck runs out, the spread of disease causes too many cascading outbreaks, or there aren’t enough cubes left to place when needed. Exact loss thresholds and win details depend on the version you own, so review the rulebook for the version-specific ending conditions.

Beginner tips

  • Talk a lot. Share your plans so teammates can help or cover you.
  • Use your role’s special power—roles are designed to complement each other.
  • Protect hubs. Cities with many connections can trigger big outbreaks.
  • Save at least one action to react after an infection phase if you can.
  • Move cards toward teammates who can use them to discover cures.
  • Don’t panic about single outbreaks—plan to contain chains of outbreaks.
  • Adjust strategy to the difficulty level and any expansion rules you’re using.

FAQ

How many players should I play with?

Pandemic works well with 2–4 players. Fewer players mean each person may need to cover more actions; more players allow more teamwork and planning.

Can I share cards freely with other players?

Players cooperate by sharing cards, but sharing usually has limits based on location and timing. Check your edition’s rules for the exact sharing conditions.

Are there different versions or expansions I should know about?

Yes. There are expansions and newer editions that add roles, new challenges, and rule tweaks. Read the official rulebook for your copy to learn edition-specific rules.
