How to Play Spoons

How to Play Spoons

Spoons is a fast, funny card game about collecting four cards of the same rank and then reacting quickly. You need a normal deck of cards, and you can find a regular deck of playing cards from Playmore. This guide uses one common version of Spoons; rules can vary a little between families and regions.

Quick facts

Players 3–8
Best for Quick family and group games
Goal Make four of a kind and grab a spoon
Cards One standard 52-card deck, without jokers
Spoons One fewer spoon than the number of players
Round winner Anyone who gets a spoon
Overall winner The last player who has not been eliminated

What you are trying to do

In each round, try to collect four of a kind. A four of a kind is four cards with the same rank, such as four 7s or four Queens. Suits do not matter, so a 7 of hearts and a 7 of clubs belong to the same group. When you complete your set, quietly or obviously take one spoon from the middle. As soon as one spoon moves, everyone else may take one too. Because there is one fewer spoon than players, one person will be left without one.

The player without a spoon receives the next letter in S-P-O-O-N. After someone has collected all five letters, that player is out. The game continues until only one player remains.

What you need

Gather three to eight players, one regular 52-card deck with no jokers, and sturdy spoons that are safe to reach for. Use one fewer spoon than the number of players: seven spoons for eight players, six for seven players, and so on. Clear enough space in the middle of the table for the spoons and keep elbows, cups, and other objects out of the way. You can write each player’s letters on paper or in a notes app.

Set it up

Everyone sits in a circle or around a table, with the spoons in the center where they are equally reachable. Choose a dealer and have that person shuffle the deck. The dealer gives four cards to every player, keeping the cards hidden. Players may look at their own hands, but should not show them to anyone else.

The dealer keeps the remaining deck face down. During play, the dealer will draw first. Each player will always hold four cards after choosing what to pass, so leave room in front of each player for a face-down discard. Agree before starting that the first person to reach four of a kind may take a spoon without announcing it, or may make the grab obvious. Either style works, but everyone must know what to watch for.

How to play

  1. The dealer draws. The dealer takes the top card from the face-down deck, making five cards in hand. The dealer chooses one card to keep and passes the unwanted card face down to the player on the left.
  2. Pass at the same time. Each other player picks up the face-down card arriving from the right. That player now has five cards, chooses one to discard, and slides it face down to the left. Keep the cards moving at a steady, lively pace, but never so quickly that someone cannot make a fair choice.
  3. Build a matching set. Look for cards that share a rank. If you have three 9s, for example, try to keep 9s and pass cards from other ranks. You may change your plan whenever a useful card arrives.
  4. Grab a spoon. The instant you have four of a kind, take one spoon from the center. You do not need to wait for your turn or explain what you collected.
  5. Join the scramble. Once any player takes a spoon, every other player reaches for a spoon too. You may stop passing cards and focus on the spoon. Take only one. Do not shove, pull, or yank another person’s hand; a safe, clear grab keeps the game fun.
  6. Mark the player without a spoon. The person who did not get a spoon receives the next letter of S-P-O-O-N. If this is that player’s first miss, mark S; on the next miss, mark P. A player who spells the complete word is eliminated after that round.
  7. Start again. Remove one spoon and one eliminated player before the next round, so there is still one fewer spoon than players. The next player to the dealer’s left can deal, or the group can simply rotate the dealer clockwise. Deal four new cards and repeat.
  8. Refresh the draw pile when needed. If the face-down deck runs out before a spoon is taken, pause the action. Leave any current discard in place, gather the unused discard cards, shuffle them, and turn them face down to make a new draw pile. Then continue.

How you win

You win a round by completing four of a kind and getting a spoon, but the larger goal is to be the last player still in the game. If several players complete four of a kind during a confusing moment, the player who clearly took a spoon first gets one. If two people reach for the same spoon, settle it calmly by returning it and using an agreed fair rule, such as the hand that was underneath or the player who touched it first.

A player can receive a letter even when they did not have four of a kind, because the round is about the spoon scramble, not about proving who had the best cards. Keep the letters visible so everyone knows how close each player is to elimination.

Easy first-game tips

Start by noticing which rank appears most often in your hand. Keep pairs and three-card groups, but do not become so attached to one rank that you ignore a better set arriving from the right. Because cards travel around the circle, a card you pass may eventually return to you after other players have handled it.

Watch the center of the table as well as your cards. A quiet player may take a spoon without making a sound, and a loud reaction may be a decoy. Keep your hands near your own cards so you can respond safely. Before the first round, practice passing one card around the table once; that small rehearsal makes the real scramble much easier for new players.

Quick questions

Can I take a spoon before I have four of a kind?

No. In this beginner version, take a spoon only after you have collected four cards of the same rank; then everyone else may reach for a spoon.

What happens if I am eliminated?

Leave the circle after the round in which you complete S-P-O-O-N. Remove one spoon, then let the remaining players begin a new round with one fewer player and one fewer spoon.
